The 2009 Webby People's Choice Award for the Games category, Mafia Wars, is available for services such as Facebook, Yahoo, MySpace, and as an app for the iPhone. The basic premise behind the game is that you start out as a low-level street hustler who is looking to break into the world of the Mafia. The game is based primarily on levels and rewards, and it gives you four different elements for you to look after throughout the course of the game: cash, energy, stamina, and health.

After playing through the game's initial stage where you gain some experience points, you will choose your Mafia name and choose the type of character that you wish to follow throughout the course of the game. Be very careful, however, as you cannot change the type of character you are once you get past this stage. Choosing between Mogul, Maniac, and Fearless will impact how quickly you earn money as well as the speed at which your health regenerates. After this element is addressed, you will be given your initial skill points, which will help you at different points throughout the game.

Once all of the basic setup has been addressed, the basic premise is that you want to do tasks in the game that help your Mafia family to grow. This usually involves going on social networking sites and recruiting people to add to your Mafia Wars family. This can be a great way to learn about and interact with real people to see if they share the same interests as you outside of the game.

You will need to do many odd jobs within the game to get your experience and cash to a point where you can begin to buy leveling-up elements that the game provides. As your experience, health, and cash continues to grow, more people will want to join your Mafia family. Mastering jobs in the earliest stages of the game is highly advisable, as you want to be able to grow as a conglomerate quickly and efficiently. Other elements in the game like Collectibles and Loot can be garnered at later points throughout the experience.

There are also three locations besides New York that the game takes place in throughout the experience. Cuba, Bangkok, and the recently added Moscow are all available to conquer as the head of your own Mafia family. Ultimately, the goal of Mafia Wars is to obtain the level of "Boss" during the game, as this is the highest level that can be achieved. Through a good deal of conniving, bartering, and use of street smarts, you will work your way up within the organization until you are considered to be the ultimate "Boss."
